Day 114 - Miss Potter
Happy Easter everyone. I tried to come up with something somewhat Easter related. Growing up I have seen all the religious movies and most of the worthwhile animated ones. I have even seen a bunch of films with more obscure relations to Easter... bunnies. I will say that I am not dragging myself out to the theater to see "Hop", so that is out. I do have to pause to acknowledge the existence of "Night of the Lepus" though. Killer rabbits always deserve a mention.
On to the film at hand. "Miss Potter" tells the story of children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. She is famous for creating among other things, Peter Rabbit. The film received generally positive reviews so I am looking forward to seeing Renée Zellweger excel portraying a strong character. Here's hoping this one doesn't disappoint.

Timothy Alistair Telemachus "Tim" Hetherington 1970-2011
In addition to a tribute this is going to be an introduction to my next movie. I had always planned to do at least one documentary theme this year, but after the events of Wednesday I felt that one movie had to stand alone. That movie is Restrepo.
For those that don't know who Tim was or what happened I will elaborate.

Against Premium VOD
I recently commented on the growing trend of smaller films getting released on video on demand a week before they open in the theaters. On Thursday DirectTV is premiering their "Home Premium" service. This is the biggest event to happen to the movie industry in quite a while. In my opinion it is even bigger than James Cameron's 3-D Fusion Camera System, if only for the negative effect this could have on the industry. The Home Premium service will allow subscribers to view movies two months after they have opened in theaters. Subscribers will have access to these movies, one at a time, in the highest quality currently available for a period of 48 hours. This poses a great problem when you take into account the technical savvy of today's generation.
Currently Sony, Universal, Warner Brothers and Fox are on board with this program. The National Association of Theater Owners have already come out and said that they are strongly opposed to this. There have even been hints that theaters might start to downplay or even stop promotion of movies coming from these studios. This would effect posters and the movie trailers that get shown before feature films. Today, in an open letter, 23 big name Hollywood filmmakers agree.

Roommate Picks Round 1
This is the first in what will be many installments of what I am calling "roommate picks." My roommate loves movies and every so often I will be asking him for a list of movies he thinks I need to see. For the purposes of this he will be represented by a depiction of Tank McNamara. Round 1 is a list of five movies. On with the show.

Day 105 - Hobo with a Shotgun
Today is Friday so I decided to give myself a treat. I have been waiting for Hobo with a Shotgun all week. Grindhouse is back and this time it comes from Canada.

Another one
I do not know if I plan to make this a trend, but I do know that I don't plan to over post trailers. There are a lot of good movies that come out every year and posting trailers for all of them would get me off track. I will thus try to limit my posting to the occasional trailer for movies that I find interesting, movies that might go slightly under the radar.
Surprise
I received a nice surprise today in "Hobo with a Shotgun." This is a result of the On Demand trend I talked about in my previous posting. Grindhouse is officially back and it is taking no prisoners. The movie is now on my list and I cannot wait to watch and comment on it. Until then the trailer will have to suffice.

Day 92 - Hard Boiled (Lat sau san taam)
Let me start off by saying this is one of the weirdest posters I have seen in a while. The picture of Chow Yun-Fat with the baby is very odd. This was the only Hong Kong poster I could find so what could I do.
